Primary Dyspepsia

There is a new debate beginning to surface amongst the political cognoscenti. It's all about the primaries. ''Why,'' they ask, ''should New Hampshire and Iowa always have the opportunity to go first?'' Why indeed!

William Gardner of New Hampshire has the power to call the first primary 'seven days or less' before any other state. This is a State decree and is observed almost by gentleman's agreement by the other states. Should anyone wish to play 'dirty' the whole system could be forced into a re examination which would result in the radicalization of how the primaries would be scheduled.

It all sounds very necessary on paper. After all, why should two small states fire the starting gun in the most important race on the planet? It can be argued without much debate that these two states are far from being truly representative of the Nation. The consequence is that candidates are forced to take positions on the local rural issues which are of little interest to city dwellers. What we need to do is choose a state like Texas which contains a mix of voters representing a wide cross section of issues of interest. Sounds fine until a closer look at the practicalities is undertaken.

First of all, nobody likes change and those in New Hampshire and Iowa will shout 'nay' the loudest. The holding of Primaries in small states was designed to redress the balance and provide an opportunity for them to punch above their weight just once in four years. However, who said elections were supposed to be fair? Not for the first time powerful entities have eyed the privileged position of these minnows with envy. After all there is money involved. Lots of it. TV anchors may well prefer to be ensconced at the Sheraton in San Francisco than, say, the 'Holiday Inn' in Manchester NH. There would be lots of late night discussion programs, interviews with the candidates, print journalism galore. Money to be made. Then there's all those fund raising dinners. Need one say more?

The idea of forcing change is now out of the bottle. It may be too late for 2008 but don't discount the emergence of a National Primary for 2012.When morality or ethics clash with money, a rationale is found for the justification of the latter. Eardleyfactor is tipping radical change for 2012 which is bad news for New Hampshire and Iowa, but a great opportunity for a multitude of entities who see the' more representative' National Primary' as a justification to end the hegemony of the 'status quo' and make lots of funding available for whatever 'cause'.

Money talks- and here in America it talks with a loud voice!
